About
Molly Jean Hormel
I grew up in the Hudson Valley, NY, where a lifelong connection to the outdoors, and even a 2nd-grade Career Day appearance as a painter, shaped my early desire to pursue art. I am currently earning my BA in Visual Arts at Denison University, where living at the student-run Homestead, an environmentally sustainable community, has further grounded my interest in the relationships between humans and the natural world.
My practice explores how color and light shape mood and our relationship with the environment. Through saturated landscapes, I create intimate spaces that soothe while holding quiet tension. Drawing from the Hudson River School and Romanticism, I question landscape's legacy of conquest and control. My goal is to reclaim softness as a feminist gesture, shifting the gaze from dominance toward mutual becoming.
