Skeleton of Phoenix embodies the direction I am taking my art practice–feminist landscapes. This concept focuses on cultivating safe spaces free from patriarchal ideals whilst redirecting the male gaze by emphasizing the intimate, symbiotic relationship between humans and the natural world. Additionally, this painting demonstrated the encroaching patriarchal systems attempting to reclaim the space. Skeleton of Phoenix depicts the earth ship I live in at the Homestead–a sustainable living community, which is made of mud brick and tires. Phoenix is about 20 years old, and it is beginning to deteriorate, revealing its core. This is emblematic of the current state of the Homestead due to administrative authorities threatening its future, thus revealing the heart of the Homestead as people come together to keep its legacy alive.
